Unlike Any Other Rose

Teen People.com (Online) - May 06, 2005

Rose McGowan is a self-confessed Elvis fanatic. Hear how she lived out her dream of kissing The King.

You probably know Rose McGowan best as perky Paige Halliwell, the youngest of three sisters who dabble in witchcraft on The WB's Charmed; but next week, be prepared to see a different side of the starlet. McGowan will play the legendary Ann-Margret in the four-hour TV mini-series, Elvis (May 8, 9 p.m. and May 11, 8 p.m. on CBS), a fact-based drama about the life and times of The King. We had a little chat with Rose to get her opinions on love, cheating, and whether or not Elvis is still alive…

Are you an Elvis fan?
Huge Elvis fan. Huge. I took myself to Memphis five years ago, just because. I totally did the tourist thing where you pay to record a song in the famous Sun studios. I sang "Are You Lonesome Tonight," which I have to say, came out pretty good!

So do you think Elvis is still alive?
No, I wish. Poor thing. I think it's pretty obvious he just sort of overdosed, and it's wishful thinking on the part of other fans that he's walking around out there. They just need to let him rest in peace.

In the mini-series you play legendary actress Ann-Margret… and you have an affair with Elvis while he's married. Have you ever been involved in a love triangle like that?
I was involved in a love triangle when I was 12. I kissed two different boys two days apart and it was a big scandal at school. In my defense, one of the boys kissed me. I was just standing there and he went for it. Of course, someone saw and it got around, which was really unfortunate because I only liked the other guy. It was a bad situation -- my good name was besmirched.

What are your feelings on cheating?
It never ends well, and if you're cheating, that usually means there's something wrong with your relationship that you need to look at. To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever cheated on me, and I've definitely never done it.

OK then, what do you think of the whole friends with benefits thing?
I don't think that works either. It's almost impossible to stay with somebody and not have one of the two develop some sort of feelings, which will invariably get hurt.

I have to say, you're a lot more sensitive than I was expecting, considering you've been cast as a bad girl in so many movies, like Jawbreaker.
That's the acting. I'm such a wuss! I cry all the time. I see someone at a bus stop who looks sad and I cry. Things just don't shed off my back as easily as they would off, I don't know, cooler people? Maybe I'm not that cool. Or maybe I just admit that I get my feelings hurt easily while other people won't say it. When I was really young, I would hide behind that tough girl exterior. I'd scowl all the time. But the reality was that I was overly sensitive. I pretty much try to pick boyfriends now who are the least likely to hurt me. I go for the nice guy.

Was Marilyn Manson a nice guy?
Very much so. Very much so.

Did you have crying scenes in Elvis?
Well, Elvis and I have a breakup scene. But mostly I just got to make out with him, which was fantastic because Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, who plays Elvis, is incredibly talented and incredibly hot. He has the best lips on the planet, bar none. I basically got paid to make out with this sexy guy and then do one big, dramatic crying scene, which is fine. I was probably crying because I couldn't kiss him anymore.

What's the ultimate role you'd want to land?
Oh, I think that would be playing Jane Eyre. I love period dramas. I would do it on PBS, I don't even really care.

Maybe you could pitch it to The WB…
Yeah, but they'd probably make me wear a tube top for the part.

TV GUIDE INTERVIEW [07 Jun 2005|12:24am]

[ mood | contemplative ]

TV Guide (US) - May 20, 2005

When WB unveiled its fall sked on Tuesday, the Frog net confirmed it had renewed Charmed for an eighth season. What's more, former rock star and Extra talking head Mark McGrath will come aboard as a series regular. No word yet whether he'll play naughty or nice (or if he can act), so we won't wrap our heads around that one right now. Before the conclusion of the two-part season finale, "Something Wicca This Way Goes" (the conclusion airs Sunday at 8 pm/ET), TVGuide.com touched base with each of the three Charmed sisters in separate interviews for a glimpse into their past, present and future.

TVGuide.com: Would you have been happy if the two-part season finale were also the series finale?
Holly Marie Combs: I think there's more things for the characters to do. There's so much we haven't done yet! I could be dead wrong and I have been before. But personally, I'm not done yet! [Laughs] I'm pretty sure that this ending [wouldn't] satisfy our hardcore fans.

Alyssa Milano: None of it's wrapped up! I think at the end of a series, the most important thing is to take care of what the fans want to see. They've dedicated so much time and energy to find us, no matter what night we are on and have followed us for seven years. I think the fans would like Phoebe to settle down and find a love like she experienced with Cole, but obviously not with a demon.

TVG: What would the fan reaction have been to cancelation?
Combs: [Smiles] Outrage!

TVG: It's crazy how Charmed was kept on the bubble. You might have gotten a quicker renewal if the show were retitled Desperate Housewitches.
Rose McGowan: That seems to be the craze right now, but there's only one sister married [on the show], so I don't know how that would work. We'd all have to get married!

TVG: Alyssa, you'd be Wysterical on Wisteria Lane! You'd fit in.
Milano: Everyone thinks I should play Teri Hatcher's little sister. I get that a lot. I don't think I'd commit to it for a long engagement, but I'd definitely do a story arc on that show. If Charmed were to wrap, I [would] not make any set plans. I'm just going to spend a year traveling and doing other things. We work sometimes 85 hours a week, so it doesn't leave a lot of room for self-exploration.

TVG: Rose, you could give Nicollette Sheridan a run for her money as the neighborhood tramp.
McGowan: [Smirks] Thank you for calling me a tramp. I appreciate that. Why would I play a tramp exactly? What if I play a lady in a burlap sack? I'm not typecast. [Chuckles] Listen, you whore, look up tramp in the dictionary. That is not a flattering term. I could play the saucy bitch. How's that?

TVG: Speaking of... er, divas, let's put the perennial fan question to rest. Is Shannen Doherty ever coming back?
Milano: I don't think so. I think when she left the show, she alienated everybody. I don't think they would bring her back.

McGowan: I've actually met Shannen a couple of times and I liked her very much. She was extremely nice. Again, I wasn't here [when she left]. I don't know what the hell happened.

TVG: How hard was it for you to fit in, Rose? Does everyone really get along?
McGowan: It was a bit of an adjustment at first, but it's fine. This is a dysfunctional family. I've come to love these people, and it [has been] kind of messing with me that I might not see them anymore. Don't get me wrong, I'd be over it in two days! Just kidding.

Rose In bloom

Charmed Magazine (US) - June 01, 2005

”Dancing around a guy playing a lute, I wanted to kill myself.” In an exclusive interview with Charmed Magazine, the always honest Rose McGowan discusses her favourite and least favourite Charmed moments with David Waldon…

When Rose McGowan joined the cast of Charmed at the beginning of its fourth season, she had no idea that the show would still be going strong four years later. Not that she’s complaining… The beautiful actress, who made her name via such films as Scream and The Doom Generation is the first to acknowledge the huge impact Charmed has had on her life.

Here, she chats candidly to Charmed Magazine’s David Waldon about her time on the show, including her favourite episodes, how she adjusted to the pace of a TV series and her ever blossoming movie career…

Lets cut right to the chase, what’s your favourite Charmed episode?
I like ‘The Power Of Three Blondes.” I think those girls are a hoot. It’s interesting because Alyssa [Milano, Phoebe] told me that on the fan boards the fans didn’t like it because it wasn’t us, whereas I thought they would love it because it wasn’t us. I just thought they were great. I thought it was a really funny episode.

And your least favourite?
The goddess episode [“Oh My Goddess”] Because the outfits were awful. We look Greek, first of all, so I look like I’m wearing a toga. Secondly, I just didn’t like it. That’s probably a tie with the nymph episode [“Nymphs Just Want To Have Fun”] Ooh, that was bad for me. Dancing around a guy playing a lute, I wanted to kill myself. [laughs] But other than that I like a lot of them. I really do. But those are my two least favourites.

After a career in movies, can you ever really get used to the pace of making a TV show?
I’ve certainly gotten a lot better at memorizing. Before it would take me half an hour to memorize five pages and now I can memorize ten. Holly [Marie Combs, Piper] can just look at it and have it in less than two minutes, but I don’t have that gift.

How many pages, On average, do you shoot a day?
Eight to eleven.

With such an intensive workload is it difficult coming back to work after say, the summer hiatus?
I don’t dread coming back to work at all, because I like working. What I dread is the exhaustion that I know will follow. I dread knowing that I go from being a four-cylinder person to a one-cylinder person. I don’t think that you get used to that, and your body doesn’t get used to that. I normally get five flu bugs per season. But then you’re well compensated and there are a lot of people looking for jobs. So there are a lot of bonuses as well. I call it the ‘golden handcuff.’

Does this explain why you haven’t made a lot of films since you started on Charmed – because you’re too beat when the season’s done?
I’m just tired.

Do you miss making movies?
Yeah, very much.

Is there a chance you may make a film during the next hiatus?
I have to be more proactive at developing stuff because so far I’ve had bad luck. It seems that the movies that they want me to do and that I want to do start around two months before I wrap, and then the movies that they want me to do and that I want to do start about a month after I come back. There always seems to be this weird time that I have off and that’s exactly when things are not going on. So I think I just have to be more creative with my own things off the ground, and just be willing to be tired year-round. I think that’s what it is. By the end, I just want to go to sleep.

What kind of films are you looking to do now?
If I could do a Donnie Darko for a female character. Or anything like drama or a biopic. I really want to do a film on Clara Bow, still. Things like that. It doesn’t even have to be offbeat. Pretty much the only thing I’m not interested in doing right now is black comedy. I’m a little bit worn out by that.

Speaking of comedy, Charmed has given audiences a chance to see you in a different light because Paige us so funny and quirk, while your movie characters have tended to be aloof. Our last question then, has the show given you a chance to change how people see you?
Yeah, it has and it hasn’t. It’s interesting, because I’ve had people come up and meet me when I’m out and pretty much the big thing that they say is, “Oh you’re so much different from your character, Paige.” And then I always want to say “Yes, it’s a character – that’s the key word in that sentence.” I created a kind of baby Lucille Ball. I never know the right word exactly, but it’s kind of like showing a sensitive-slash-vulnerable side to the character. But yeah the image that was promoted for me in the past is certainly not the reality.

Actress Rose McGowan and journalist Dave Zinczenko have SPLIT amicably after realizing the long distance between them was playing havoc with their relationship.

The Hollywood-based "Charmed" star and the editor of New York City's Men's Health magazine dated for three years, but ultimately their professional lives proved too much of a strain, according to pals.

One friend tells website PageSix.com, "The bottom line was that Dave couldn't leave New York and Rose couldn't leave Los Angeles."

However, the gossip site claims the real reason behind their split may stem from McGowan's recent trip to London, where she reportedly delayed her flight home after meeting TV presenter Steve Jones.

At the present time these are unsubstantiated rumours and therefore should be treated as such. The report on Hollywood.com, which originated from a story from The New York Post, linked any break down of Rose and Daves relationship to Roses recent trip to London. However contray to this Rose stated in an interview for Greek magazine Katerina that her relationship with Dave at that time was over

We have not seen you in a while with David Zinczenko.
Hmm yeah. I could tell you that I am single right now. But I am happy and Im certain that someday I will meet Mr. Right. Hes gonna have to be very patient with me (laughs)

This magazine was issued on 10/05/05, the actual date that this interview was taken is unknown but it was most likely to have been well in advance of publication and therefore BEFORE Rose arrived in London

The full interview will appear on mcgowan_fans soon.
